Based on feedback and priorities from its members, the IDA is piloting an internship program. The Internship program addresses challenges with the recruitment and retention of ranger coordinators, a common issue across the sector.

The internship program aims to support strong and stable ranger programs that can attract and keep good staff through developing a desert based Indigenous land management internship. The internship program will connect quality prospective job applicants with community based Indigenous land management programs.

The internship model is being developed with roll out planned for 2023.

Additional aims of the internship program are:

  • Support best practice training of new recruits
  • Attract and train better prepared recruits
  • Grow the profile of the desert Indigenous land management sector
  • Support rangers and community-based programs to play a strong role in training future staff
