Ranger programs are primarily funded through the Australian Government’s Working on Country program, providing employment and opportunities for meaningful work on country. However, beyond wages, funding for Indigenous ranger programs is limited, particularly across Australia’s 10 deserts. In recent years, IDA members have increasingly called for more flexible investment in the sector, enabling them to invest in their own priorities. Priorities that have kept desert biodiversity and culture strong for 65,000 years.
The IDA Foundation provides grant-based funding to Indigenous desert ranger teams to provide social, cultural, economic and environmental outcomes in the Australian desert.
