After spending years travelling out bush and sleeping in swags in all weather to look after country, Ngurrara Rangers finally began construction on their very own dedicated ranger base on Ngurrara Country.
"It's good to have our own ranger base out in the desert."
The ranger base has been a long time coming. With beginnings based out of Djugerari community, it wasn't long before Traditional Owners, rangers and the PBC came together and decided they needed a ranger base within the exclusive Ngurrara native title area – independent of community, or places with strong family ties. The PBC gifted a block of land to the Ngurrara Ranger Program which would become the site of their ranger base.
"At the moment, rangers are doing heaps of good jobs out on Country but they haven't got any accommodation, because most accommodations the rangers do have, they in communities."
After a week of construction, the team now have a container dome which provides them with shade and storage, and a row of dongas. They will continue construction as they go.
Eventually the team would like to develop a carbon neutral ranger base, and are looking for funding to help them do this. They'd like to install a bore, have rooms rangers can sleep in with air conditioning, showers and toilets, and have good storage for their equipment.
Once established, it will also provide a good place to camp for Traditional Owners, Elders, researchers and partners supporting the ranger program.
The Ngurrara Rangers are actively looking for funding to support this project.
