Country In the Middle

5 minute watch

Yagga Yagga is home to the Ngururrpa people, it’s their home in the middle of Australia. The country in the middle.

When the cool desert breeze blows through community, it means country is happy. Cleaning up the community and bush is an important way rangers keep country happy. Together, the Ngururrpa Rangers burn country during the cold season to look after homes and clean up country for the animals who live there too. Ngururrpa is also a special place where animals like the Night Parrot live. Rangers are learning new ways to track these special birds.

This film was created by Kerenza Sunfly and the Indigenous Desert Alliance in collaboration with the Ngururrpa, Ngurra Kayanta and Paraku Rangers to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2022 and recognise desert rangers getting up and standing up for country everyday.

Kerenza Sunfly is a young Ngururrpa man who grew up in Balgo Community and Joy Springs Community, his skin from the Kukatja tribe is Tjungarrayi and from the Walmajarri tribe is Tjupurru. Kerenza loves going out on country with his old people and learning about everything. Kerenza works with the media and ranger development teams at the Indigenous Desert Alliance.
