Over four days in August 2021, the Nyangumarta Rangers share skills, stories and song with eleven Kiwirrkurra and three Li-Anthawirriyarra Sea Rangers from Borroloola.
Together, the rangers hunt for feral cats over spinifex covered sand plains, discover the burrows of the endangered Tjalapa (Great Desert Skink) and visit Wilkinkara, a breathtaking salt lake and sacred place for the Pintupi people.
“I had amazing time with Sea Rangers that came all the way, Nyangumarta Rangers and li-Anthawirriyarra, it was a pleasure to have them here doing Ranger exchange with IDA and I felt so proud of myself sharing cultural knowledge and it was so fun. I enjoyed my trip out bush showing my mother’s country, also Kiwirrkurra. I’m so lucky to have my mum there and aunties too and Kiwirrkurra fellas yuwa palyalingku, it was fun”
Nyangumarta Warrarn IPA rangers work on Country that stretches from the sands of 80 mile back all the way back through the Great Sandy Desert in the east.
WebsiteTjamu Tjamu Aboriginal Corporation manages the Kiwirrkurra Indigenous Protected Area over the entirety of their native title determination. The Kiwirrkurra Rangers men's and women's team have a strong focus on using traditional knowledge on country and working with Western scientists to bring both practices together.
