Ngurrara men rangers are supporting young people with a safe cultural space to connect to Country and Culture. On-country camps bring hope and healing to young people and enable opportunities to grow into leaders of their communities and become rangers themselves. The Ngurrara Rangers' Ranger Development project called 'Passing the torch' included itinerary and safety planning, logistics, catering and coordinating both Elders and young men during activities.
The camp was out at Old Cherrabun Station, south of Bayulu Community and west of Halls Creek in the Kimberley region. During the camp Elders and Rangers told many stories about the place and the history. Activities included making artefacts with the young men, including moogoodoo, which is a fighting stick, along with making healing sticks. Participants did a lot of hunting and fishing and caught marlu (kangaroo) and junmar (barramundi) and shared knowledge on how to prepare and cook them the traditional way. The team also shared how to look for bush food and medicines.
We want to have more kids and more Elders coming along. Next time working with partners from in town and have them come along. We are excited for more trips where we can bring young people out to learn about their country.
IDA Ranger Development Projects support rangers directly on the ground with their aspirations. A big thanks to Lotterywest and everyone involved in making this project become a reality!
