Ngururrpa Women Rangers Organise Inspiring Photography Project
3 minute watch
The Ngururrpa Women Rangers organised an inspiring project through the IDA’s Ranger Development Program called "Engaging Young Women In Ranger Work Project." This project has been important for enabling Ngururrpa elders to pass on cultural knowledge to the next generation of rangers and leaders.
Through this project, the Ngururrpa Rangers learned and shared knowledge in various areas. Rangers listened to the stories of their elders, and they also gained practical storytelling skills such as how to use a camera effectively, how to take great photos, how to conduct interviews and record elders, and how to edit videos.
Ngururrpa women rangers, including Kathryn Njamme, Monica Njamme and Gina Sunfly, took the lead in planning and collaborating with partner organisations involved. This was a good opportunity to develop valuable skills such as logistics and activity planning.
The young girls involved in this project were thrilled to be a part of it and have been heard saying "kurrungpa palya!" (feeling good). This project has not only enabled rangers to connect with their cultural heritage, but it has also supported storytelling skill development using multimedia.
Here are a selection of photographs the Ngururrpa Rangers created. Credits on the images.
With thanks to Sarah Landro from Camera Story and Clare Wood from Enterprise Partnerships WA for contributing to this project.
